"Well Done" according to Pamela Malone. The conceit is that each story is inspired by an old black and white photograph. McCall Smith hits it out of the park each time. Each photograph reveals an entire life story. Smith's ability to imagine and get inside the lives of others is amazing. I think this is his best short story collection (I've read them all).. "For Those Who Like Unstressful Stories" according to Karen A. Charbonneau. Charming. I read this short book of stories in two sittings. Wide margins on a physically small book, but the large print was easy on old eyes. I've never read McCall Smith's books, but may take a look at his Scottish mysteries. I suppose there is room for pleasant endings - knowing ahead of time, it makes reading less emotionally stressful.. "it was fun reading with lots of surprises" according to L. Caine. From old pictures, Stories are wovenOh what stories! Before I started reading I would imagine what stories I would create, The creative genius of this author shamed me it was fun reading with lots of surprises Please more!!!

From the bestselling author of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series comes this splendid collection. The image of a woman haloed by light in a train station becomes the lighthearted tale of a nun's decision to leave the sisterhood and discover what the big city has to offer. Charming and poignant, this collection brims with the flourishes of grace and humor that could only come from the pen of Alexander McCall Smith.(With black-and-white photographs throughout.)From the Hardcover edition
