Bachmann Jane Austen does not seem the type to flip the bird to another lady, but for Curtis Sittenfeld she just might make an exception. Eligible,"a modern retelling" of Pride and Prejudice is worse than dull. Sittenfeld's "homage" completely misunderstands the moral underpinnings and paradox of the original, particularly the character of Elizabeth Bennett, The result is a bloated and banal travesty that proves a cheap imitation is never the sincerest. Elaine Friedman said Austen Lovers: Proceed at Your Own Peril. I loved "Pride and Prejudice." I even like Curtis Sittenfeld's previous novels. and I was eager to read her "take" on Jane Austen's beloved classic. Admittedly, I was swept away and delighted by Part One of "Eligible." But, as I pressed on, my delight turned to boredom and disgust with the vapid, one-dimensional characters, the increasingly lazy writing, and the "jump the shark" plot twists which attempt to pack in every absurdity and stereoty
