. Tore Samuelsson is a Professor in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He has been active in bioinformatics research for more than fifteen years and has over ten years' experience of teaching in the field, including the development of web resources for molecular biology and bioinformatics education

As such, the book can be very useful to a general science audience, particularly those with a computer science background, whether established researchers or undergraduate students. Each chapter deals with a different use of bioinformatics, ranging from human disease to gene technology, giving the reader up-to-the-minute information in bite-sized chunks. " Samuelsson has devised a well-structured, step-by-step approach. The writing is inspiring and engaging, and the inclusion of Perl code makes it easy for readers to apply the knowledge and observe the outcomes." < br />Sara Kalvala, Computing Reviews . The topics show the interdisciplinary nature of bioinformatics and are introduced in a readable manner, so the novice is not swamped with detail." Dr Leighton Dann, The Biologist"The book provides a lively and accessible introduction to current research in the life sc

Okay, but directionless I used this book in an introductory grad-level bioinformatics course. No programming knowledge was necessary to enroll and we learned python as part of this course. This book was required, but I only used it for the first week or two of class. Really not that helpful for my needs. My main issue with the book is the general lack of editorial feel. Most chapters are topical case studies which also describe how to do a task in perl (there is a companion website which provides equivalent python scripts). Especially since we were learning Python in this course and considering that the field is moving towards object-oriented languages, I rarely n. "Nice update for any scientist who needs to review the new genomics tools" according to Piotr Krasucki. Use this a a desk reference to leverage new genomics tools. Relatively well written summary - starting point. Strongly recommended. Informative NH This is a useful and informative text; although I won't be using it "extensively" until next semester, I have scanned the chapters and it appears to have the right content for studying the subject thoroughly. I look forward to supplementing class lectures with the info contained in this text.

Relevant biological topics are used throughout the book and are combined with practical bioinformatics examples, leading students through the process from biological problem to computational solution. Designed for biologists without previous programming experience, this textbook provides a hands-on introduction to Unix, Perl and other tools used in sequence bioinformatics. The vast amount of information generated has made computational analysis critical and has increased demand for skilled bioinformaticians. All of the Perl scripts, sequence and database files used in the book are available for download at the accompanying website, allowing the reader to easily follow each example using their own computer.
