Both the character of Winston Churchill and the Boer War come to life in this narrative.Candice Millard is a talented journalist. She can write a gripping narrative from any historical event. Using diaries and biographies from the era, Millard creates a setting and paces the plot just fast enough to make this story engaging. Credit should also go to Winston Chur. Good book, a bit short. RB Colorado I have read Churchill's account of this saga and some others. She has some new research that I had not seen before. She writes very well - in this book and her others. It is a short book, took me about 3 hours. Sort of whished she had done a full accounting of his further work in the Boer War after his escape, not that it was really part of the story, but, she writes well, and, I would. "A masterpiece" according to Hector E. Castro. I could not put this book down, a page turner from the beginning. The reader learns not only about Churchill youth and how overbearing he must have been but, at the same time, the book points out his incredible leadership.One learns about this English/Bóer war which I knew very little and about Ghandi long before he made his mark in India.Great read, 5 stars without question.
