And when a young police officerthe son of VBI investigator Lester Spinneyis kidnapped, is that meant to be a warning to the VBI team to drop the case? After all these many years, the truth behind the murder still has to the power to kill, and it’s up to Gunther and his team to capture the living and finally put the dead to rest.. The victim was Hank Mitchell, and Gunther must chase down old rumors and speculationswho benefited from his death and the disappearance of his body? And was his death somehow tied to New York City mafia money being laundered through the construction project? But what seems the coldest of cold cases roars back to life when one of the central figures in this mystery is shot to death, right after speaking with Gunther. It becomes a case for the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) and its leader, Joe Gunther, since they have the resources and the ability to investigate an old, very cold, missing persons case that has now been reclassified as murder. A forty-year-old skeleton is found encased in a concrete slab at a recently decommissioned nuclear energy site

Radio Writer said Please tell me I don't have to wait another year!!!. I first learned about Archer Mayor while traveling in Vermont in 2012. Since then I have read all of his previous 26 novels, and anxiously awaited this latest installment in the Joe Gunther series. Mayor did NOT disappoint! This book is every bit as suspenseful as the previous works, and is just a darned good read.My only complaint is that he takes a year to put out a book, which then likely takes another year to work through the bowels of the publishing industry to make it to market and I devour it in 5-hours!! A couple of predictable elements (Joe gets injured, the good guys arrive at the last second) but these are par for the genre - the Joe Gunther series has created its own universe and readers look forward to re-visiting it regularly. Gunther is now about 80 years old but he is as wonderfully suspended in time as Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Mayor's characters breathe. They exist and we think we know them. Every so often Mayor throws us a curve, just to keep it honest. This book is a page-tu. Great story Archer mayor is one of the best, I have read every one of his books and can't wait for the next one. I love the characters and great plots.
