A pleasant read, but a disappointing plot. The Bike Nerd I'm of two minds on this book. I believe that Anne Hillerman has really captured the flavor and characteristics of her father's characters. Changing the character focus from Leaphorn and Chee to Bernie makes good sense, and Bernie's character is well-developed and continues to develop. The focus on Bernie's mother and sister is an effective . Hasn't peaked yet Anne Hillerman is to be saluted for carrying forward the excellent characters developed by her late father -- Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Ms. Manuelito. But after reading so many Hillermans, one absolutely knows Jim or his police officer wife are going to get in trouble by not having a firearm handy while doing police business. One knows the. Close, but no cigar. Maybe it's just me, but I've read every one of Tony Hillerman's novels, as well as the first one in this continuation series. This second one in the series was very slow to get off the ground with, I thought, the author getting distracted by too many side-stories. Not particularly satisfying.
