His adventures in the magical land will keep you turning pages as fast as you can--he and the star escape evil old witches, deadly clutching trees, goblin press-gangs, and the scheming sons of the dead Lord of Stormhold. You'll love goofy, earnest Tristran and the talking animals, gnomes, magic trees, and other irresistible denizens of Faerie that he encounters in his travels. One fateful night, Tristran promises his beloved that he will retrieve a fallen star for her from beyond the Wall that stands between their rural English town (called, appropriately, Wall) and the Faerie realm. Stardust is an utterly charming fairy tale in the tradition of The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story. "I was not a Gaiman fan, did not know who he was" according to A Customer. I picked this book up at the airport, never having heard of Neil Gaiman. I wanted something mindless to read through a long flight and did not hold high hopes of great enjoyment. To my great delight I was wrong! What a surprise, what a great find. The writing is effortless, the style seems so easy, until suddenly you find yourself in the middle of a wonderful complexity of plot and character. Characters are imaginative and memorable, the story, al. because I heard nothing but wonderful things about him as an author Adrienne I picked up Neil Gaiman's American Gods years ago, because I heard nothing but wonderful things about him as an author. Could not get into it. His writing was too rough around the edges for the girls who loves all things lyrical and flowing. I ran headlong into the same conundrum when I looked through Neverwhere so I wrote off Gaiman as one of those authors that other people loved and cherished, but that I would never really like. Obviously, he is. "I'm new to Neil Gaiman's literature, having come from" according to James S. Keane. I'm new to Neil Gaiman's literature, having come from a background of mainly Science Fiction and older Fantasy novels. I'm hooked. His writing style is completely engaging, and while I wouldn't quite put him at the level of Dan Simmons or Iain Banks, he's damn close while being a lot more accessible. I'm looking forward to exploring everything else he has written, as he is now one of my "go to" authors. Do yourself a favor and read Stardust.
