In her most accessible, commercial novel yet, the “supremely perceptive writer of formidable skill and intelligence (New York Times Book Review) turns her astute eye to a dramatic family reunion, where simmering tensions and secrets come to a head over three long, hot summer weeks. With five novels and two collections of stories, Tessa Hadley has earned a reputation as a fiction writer of remarkable gifts. "Exquisitely imagined and stunningly realistic" according to B. Case. “The Past,” by Tessa Hadley, is an exquisitely imagined and stunningly realistic psychological portrait of a family. It held me captive from beginning to end, but not in the usual way. I quickly discovered that this was a novel to be savored. There is usually a large number of siblings (check), each has issues and. Dull as Ditch Water SelmaSue Ms. Hadley writes beautiful prose but unfortunately there's not much of a story behind the prose. Boring characters, very little action, and I'm not sure how I manage to make it to the end. Most likely I thought there'd be some action at the end, and the author teases us with some potential excitement, but it is not to be. If you want a wordy, boring, drawn out story about nothing, this book is for you.
