Mallory is back and at her best This is one of my favorite Mallory novels in a long while. The case was not only interesting but riveting and the pacing was very well done. As the perspective changed from the different characters each story was insightful in its own way as the novel slowly brought everything together. Many times in these novels it's felt like filler until we got back to the main characters. Unlike past novels this one didn't repeat endlessly Mallory's quirks like the reader had forgotten her stunning looks, her way with computers, her driving or her pe. Twelfth in series The Mallory series is in a rut. The book is readable, but it lacks direction as a series. There is little mystery here with a series of murders and the kidnapping of a blind boy. We know the murderer from early in the story and O'Connell does her usual good job with the psychological behavior of various characters. However, beyond good psychological mysterys the thing that made this series was the character of Mallory the possibly sociopathic detective. In this book as in the last couple of books she has become a cardboard cut out doing . "A Nun and Her Nephew Vanish, and Murder, Bodies with Their Hearts Removed and Liars Fill the Pages" according to GrandmaHeather. Ms. O'Connell's "Mallory" Novels are always wonderful, intense, complicated stories. I have read every one and hope there are many more to come. Kathy Mallory had an unusual childhood, and as an adult she is an unusual police detective. Her mind is able to put things together in a way that is astonishing. So, she can see who the guilty areit's just a matter of convincing DAs that she needs warrants and getting witnesses to co-operate and tell her what she needs to know.
