First Edition Valuable Undergrad Molecular Biology text Kindle Customer Novel approach focused on genomics. Valuable sidebars, and invaluable 32 page glossary.Three years old, not covering new powerful sequencing algorithms, but 2nd edition (due next month) might.. "Excellent General Overview of Genomics" according to Andy Baxevanis. I found that "Genomes" provides the reader with a thorough yet gentle introduction to the field -- ample illustrations, well-written text, frequent sidebars describing relevant techniques or developments. I've found the book to be a good reference to have on the shelf, and have purchased copies for people when they join my lab group in order to introduce them to or refamiliarize themselves with the technologies underlying the generation of sequence data. I can very easily see this book being used to supplement lectures in an introductory course on genomics and biotechnology.. Good overview of modern genetics Because of the explosion of genetics research and technology in today's world, many textbooks and monographs on the subject have appeared. This book is certainly one of the finest of these, and emphasizes, as stated in the the preface, the major research issues in genetics, rather than issues that were important two decades ago. Genomes, not genes, the author states, should be the topic of primary focus. The more fundamental 'microscopic' processes such as DNA replication and mutation are studied in terms of their effects on the genome. This reflects the current move in genet

The writing is clear and straightforward, and the diagrams are excellent, making difficult topics like DNA sequencing, RNA replication, and genomic evolution, mutation, and recombination approachable and understandable. From Library Journal This undergraduate textbook concentrates on the study of the genome (the total genetic makeup of an organism) as a whole rather than the traditional approach of studying specific genes.

He has also given invited research papers at more than 35 international conferences.. Terry is a highly respected author having written 8 books (translated into numerous languages) and approximately 150 other publications including 50 research papers on genomics, molecular evolution and biomolecular archaeology. He is currently Professor of Biomolecular Archaeology and Head of Biomolecular Sciences. The new edition includes: the sequencing of the human genome; characterisation of genome expression and replication processes, and transcriptomics and proteomics.Genomes 2 has been extended to include more introductory material making it appropriate for early undergraduate study. Covering molecular genetics from the genomics perspective, Genomes, has been completely rewritten to incorporate the major advances made in the past three years. As with the first edition, the superb full-colour illustrations are free to download.KEY CHANGES FROM THE FIRST EDITION:* Expanded introductory material* New study aids: (Learning Objectives - Highlighted Key Terms - Self Study Questions - Probl
