Beach reading at best Reading Rocks This is a story set in the mid 19th century focusing on 2 families: one family, "middle" class, whose daughter marries and gives birth to a child; and the second family - aristocrats - whose son is the father of that child. Fast forward 20 + years and the story weaves between the two families; how they connect with each other; how the child (a grown man now) becomes part of the connection; when/how will the secret come out about the man's provenance. What I liked: the writing style -- interspersed between the story line, Julian Fellowes also narrates about life in those times and the required formalit. When virtue is not noble Julian Fellowes drops back 100 years or so from Downton Abbey to chronicle the saga of two families--one wealthy but not noble; one wealthy and noble. It is a superior soap opera that punches a lot of classic literary buttons. The rise of a hard-working and gutsy commoner who struggles to crack the class ceiling in Victorian England. The tragedy of his long-dead daughter brings his family into close contact with aristocratic neighbors who have lost a beloved son and who would rather bleed out their blue blood than acknowledge a relationship with folks from the merchant class. Author Fellowes spotligh. Orson Scott Card said Fellowes takes on Vanity Fair in its own period. Just when Downton Abbey made us think that the last word had been said about the English class system, Fellowes plunges us back into Vanity Fair territory. Taking on Thackeray at his own game, Fellowes shows that the novel of social manipulation is not a lost art. I wish Fellowes were younger: Write faster, Mr. Fellowes.
