A gripping suspenseful plot, told from the perspective of an incredible, observant fetus. Original, inventive. You need to suspend reason to get into the brilliant mind and perceptions of the fetal narrator of the book, but the plot he discovers and his involvement are gripping. I couldn't put the book down.. "Humorous Tragedy" according to Cynthia. McEwan sure creates magic with 26 letters. His writing has never been better than it is in "Nutshell". Random House must be doing a series of novels written by well known authors and based on Shakespeare plays.*. As others have said this book was modeled on "Hamlet". But it's very much it's own unique story but inter woven very cleverly around some of the key Shakespearean themes. Since its revealed on page one and the dust jacket I'm not giving anything away in saying this i. "Nice, Cheeky Take on Hamlet for the Here and Now" according to The Professor. This isn't Shakespeare, but the twisty tale of a modern Hamlet told in utero and as dark dramedy is a great read!
