This one book can stop the storm We in higher education have been talking about and feeling the impact of the "perfect storm" (decreased state and federal funding, increased tuition and fees, and more need for college degrees) for almost two decades. We have tinkered around the issues with technology, various business models, and financial aid processes without much success. I think it's time we try something other than tinkering. Dr. Goldrick-Rab's recommendations in this book are insightful and based on evidence, so let's stop tinkering and fix the issues. We have many of the answers in this book. As Dr. Goldrick-Rab writes, “We, as a society, recogn. "Accessible yet substantive" according to Christian Smith. Excellent. This is a must-read if you want to engage in debates about college affordability. The book is accessible and beneficial to readers regardless of their prior knowledge. It does not sacrifice rigor for accessibility, though: a detailed appendix describes the study's methods thoroughly. In addition, this is a riveting and poignant read that you will struggle to put down. I am a former low-income/first generation college student, a current graduate student in sociology, and a future professor--and I enthusiastically recommend this book.. I highly recommend this book - especially for people with an interest Sara Goldrick-Rab delves into understanding the college affordability crisis in a manner that both humanizes and emphasizes. College is expensive, but we know that. What we don't know is how students cope with the cost - what measures they take and how those measures affect the students' experience. Not only does Sara outline the problem well, but she does so in a way that is truly accessible (and enjoyable) for any person to read. I highly recommend this book - especially for people with an interest (however broad) in higher education.
