Linda Miller said This was a re-read for me, and I enjoyed every word of it AGAIN.. Seventy-year-old Mr. Howard has just lost his son during the very early part of World War II. He is desperately sad and decides that he must get away from his native England for a while. He heads for what's he thinks will be month's fishing trip to his favorite place in the south of France, near the border at Geneva, Switzerland. Unfortunately, his trip coincides with the German invasion of France. He is initially optimistic that the Germans won't come close to where he is but soon realizes that is not to be and decides that he must return to his native England. F. Great author Bijou I have read and loved the author for many years.I reread A Town Like Alice,, originally published as The Legacy, every year or so. Never got to this one somehow until this year. I love the pace that he uses when telling his stories. I am not much for thriller type pacing or mysteries etc. The story is entertaining. As usual you can imagine it really happening. It takes me back to a more simple time, notwithstanding the war.. Amazon Customer said Nevil Shute at his best. A beautifully written story. The only real violence in the story is that of the war and plays an important part in the plot; the real story is of an heroic old English gentleman and the role he was thrust into as WWII escalated and he was trying to leave France for England. One of my favorite stories by this author.

--Sunday Times . Shute not only writes vividly and excitingly of occupied France, but with a delightful understanding of children. Mr
