As an intermediate student of Japanese, I encourage other students to get this book. It will definitely push you to higher levels, and you need to push yourself hard in order to get there. Also Michael Emmerich is a great translator. That being said, the pages are made out of a newpaper kind of paper. I have several Japanese readers, and they . "Good, but not great." according to Matthew Jeffery. I enjoyed this book. The selections of stories are interesting, although a couple of them are distinctly adult in nature, and varied, and each kanji has it's reading in furigana the first time it appears. The notes section gives an interesting, although usually un-academic explanation of some of the thornier grammar points, and the book is in general well presented.
