I'm not always a fan of books that jump back and forth from one place and character to another. But this one clicked. Finn's portrait of Tanzania and its people seemed quite authentic; it was obvious she had spent time there. The plot kept you interested, and the characters were all damaged, some more than others. The Gloaming is chillingly cinematic in contrasting East Africa’s exquisite landscape with the region’s human needs. Neurotic Romantic said Riveting. It's been a while since I read a book I couldn't put down. I'm not always a fan of books that jump back and forth from one place and character to another. But this one clicked. Finn's portrait of Tanzania and its people seemed quite authentic; it was obvious she had spent time there. The plot kept you interested, and the characters were all damaged, some more than others. Finn managed to portray nearly all sympathetically and the major ones all managed to redeem themselves. The main problem I had was with the ending, which, while I won't spoil it, was abrupt and left you wanting. As the one character puts it, "it doesn't have a good ending.. MJ Keating said Some great writing but the plot feels contrived. There was something a little schematic about this book from an undeniably competent writer. I loved the painting of Africa and Africansforeign writers are usually not so good. It's the tidy resolution and somewhat lazy rendering of the secondary characters that put me off. Finn has a truly great book in her but this isn't it.. "Melanie Finn's The Gloaming feels like the spiritual successor to J" according to EEG. Melanie Finn's The Gloaming feels like the spiritual successor to J.M. Coetzee's novel Disgrace. In contrast to Disgrace, however, there is something light and hopeful about this story. There's an ease to it, even as it explores very dark and troublesome subject matter. Maybe it's the prose that is so natural and elegant it feels like it's written in your own voice. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend!
