More of a 3.66 star book Donna Jones When I started reading this book I thought that it was more of a "beach read" type of book. You know, kind of light, easy to put down and easy to pick up, a little romance. And it was, except there was a little bit more to it than that It managed to explore some pretty deep topics and feelings. What makes mother-daughter relationships so complicated? What about the pecking orders of every relationship? What constitutes spousal abuse? Why do we allow others to make us feel smaller than we are? What would happen if we were authentic and true. Janiece Murphy said A lovely summer read. Eleanor Brown's new novel is one of those rare reading experiences where I was deeply invested in the success and failures of the characters. I was cheering for Margie and Madeleine, hoping they would each find their way to their unique and authentic selves, while simultaneous gnashing my teeth against the social forces (and people) that were preventing them from doing so.The characters were complex, adding interesting dimensions to the story. For example, it turns out that Madeleine's mother wasn't ONLY an overbearing, controlling mom - s. B. Copenhaver said Transports you to Paris. Having read Ms. Brown's earlier work, "The Weird Sisters," I had very high expectations for this book. She does not disappoint, in fact I think this one is even better. Her writing is exquisite as she paints word pictures of post-war Paris and current day Mississippi and Chicago. As both a daughter and a mother, I found the story very touching. The exploration of the relationships between mothers and daughters felt very honest. I finished this book on my way to a weekend visit with my mother and daughter and it made me want to hug both of t

In her wry and affecting follow-up to "The Weird Sisters," we meet Margie and Madeleine two women separated by decades and continents, but on same essential journey toward self-exploration and self-knowledge. It's not just a line from an old movie, it's a credo, and the underlying idea of Eleanor Brown's wise and charming new novel, "The Light of Paris." Protagonist Madeleine Spencer is repressed, depressed and downright oppressed in her marriage to a chilly Chicago businessman. Praise for "The Weird Sisters " Irresistible. "Library Journal""Eleanor Brown is high priestess of that rich place where soulfulness and emotional insight meet laugh-out-loud humor. "The Boston Globe" Delightful. Somehow each must learn to thrust off others

In Madeleine’s memories, her grandmother Margie is the kind of woman she should have been—elegant, reserved, perfect. It’s so lovely and big-hearted—it made me long for Paris."  —Jojo Moyes, New York Times-bestselling author of Me Before You and After YouThe Light of Paris is the miraculous new novel from New York Times–bestselling author Eleanor Brown, whose debut, The Weird Sisters, was a sensation beloved by critics and readers alike. Madeleine is trapped—by her family's expectations, by her controlling husband, and by her own fears—in an unhappy marriage and a life she never wanted.
