hmm Sigh. I have mixed feelings about this book.I realize that this book was a big deal back in its day, basically being the world's first novel. Things have changed in a thousand years, so it would not be fair for me to judge the book against say, a Nora Roberts novel or some such. I can enjoy other old books - Jane Eyre, Utopia, et al, despite differences in how language was used back then as compared to today. My copy of this book came with annotations to help explain certain things in the book - traditions, festivals, the usage of colors or plants, poems, and so on, so as f. Remi Fasolati said Kindle Edition is NOT the Waley Translation. This Kindle edition is a translation by Kencho Suematsu, NOT Arthur Waley, and I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to read The Tale of Genji. There are far far better translations available. The Kindle version is falsely labeled, in my opinion.. "Oldest Novel Ever Written- yet still enticing to read" according to Sarah. And by a lady too. This 1000+ page novel is the oldest known surviving novel ever written. It's about a troubled prince who is searching for the love of a mother by trying to love women both sexually and romantically. He ends up falling in love with his thirty something year old step mother who was his mother's cousin or sister (I can't remember) when he's like fifteen to fill the void of not having a mother. But a lot of things happen pertaining to complicated character webs and it's written in a beautiful, poetic way that CAN and will leave the reader confused. Especially
