Cedar Grove Chef said Stick with Massie. I read the reviews and having read Robert Massie's books about Peter the Great, Catherine the Great and Nicholas and Alexandra -- and having been to St. Petersburg -- I thought I'd read this to round out my knowledge. Montefiore is no Massey. Yes, there was information I'd not seen before. But all the detail about the sex lives of the Romanovs became quite tedious. I did not find it to be a compelling read, but more of an endurance test.. Excellent Overview of Russia's History Focused on Each Romanov Tsar Ambrose Very enjoyable book that presents a biography of each Romanov from Michael - the first - through Nicholas - the last (though his brother got to be Tsar for day). Each one was interesting and a key player in major events - and they come alive in this book. Writing a biograpghy of the family is a bit challenging - you can't present the entire history of Russia in one volume, so what to cut? Simon Sebag Montefiore’s gripping chronicle reveals their secret world of unlimited power and ruthless empire-building, overshadowed by palace conspiracy, family rivalries, sexual decadence and wild extravagance, with a global cast of adventurers, courtesans, revolutionaries and poets, from Ivan the Terrible to Tolstoy and Pushkin, to Bismarck, Lincoln, Queen Victoria and Lenin. Peter the Great tortured his own son to death while making Russia an empire, and dominated his court with a dining club notable for compulsory drunkenness, naked dwarfs and fancy dress.
