Originally, we were interested in two problems: • Can 1-systems be used as a realistic model of plant species found in nature? • Can 1-systems be applied to generate images of a wide class of fractals? It turned out that both questions had affirmative answers. This theoretical line of research was pursued very actively in the seventies, resulting in over one thousand publications. It is a corrected version of the notes which we prepared for the ACM SIGGRAPH '88 course on fractals.. Subsequently we found that 1-systems could be applied to other areas, such as the generation of tilings, reproduction of a geometric art form from East India, and synthesis of musical scores based on an interpretation of fractals. A different research direction was taken in 1984

Lecture Notes in Biomathematics?? A Customer Well this gem of a book is hidden away in the biology section of my local library. Not the easiest of places for somebody interested in computer graphics to find. This book is a great place to start if your looking for an introduction to 2D and 3D plant/organism structural modelling using computer graphics, such as modelling plant and leaf structures as well as bacteria and the like. It discusse. Too much and too little? Roger Bagula If anything this book gives too many examplesand isn't specific about the best of them. The book is dated, but has C code at the back that can be translatedto other more modern languages and systems. In Germany they were called L-systems, but in thestates these came out in Logo as turtle graphicsin the late 80's early 90's.They are not IFS, but are somewhat related.Dr. William McWorter introduced
